Geography and Location
Sitting at an elevation of approximately 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level, Hunza Valley is a high altitudes area with a moderate climate. The valley lies between Pakistan and China to the north and India to the northeast, inside Gilgit-Baltistan. The pass is a gateway to the great Karakoram Range, being close to 100 kilometres away from Gilgit.
Henzo is subdivided into three sub-regions, which track with the Upper Hunza (Gojal), Central Hunza (Hunza) and Lower Hunza (Bagro). Out of these, the Upper Hunza region has the biggest attraction for tourists because of its natural beauty and closeness to all major trekking routes.
Natural Beauty
The landscape of the Hunza Valley bears some of the most striking natural views, from snow-capped mounts to green terraced fields and plateaus where glittering water runs free like crystal. A smattering of fairy-tale villages and soaring summits sprinkled over the valley create a hair-raising visual treat for lovers of nature and photography alike.
Rakaposhi, the 27th highest mountain in the world at 7,788 meters (25,551 feet), is perhaps the most recognizable face in Hunza. The imposing sight of this peak which is an attraction itself for many trekkers and mountaineers can seen from all over the valley. Other notable peaks include nearby Ultar Sar and the distinctive Ladyfinger Peak, which are also part of Hunza's savage scenery.
Depending on the season, the valley bursts with colors: bright green at spring and summer, golden in autumn when the trees turn into a river of orange and red. During the winter, this valley transforms into a snowy paradise with temperatures frequently dropping below 0°C and serving as the base for all kinds of activities related to winter sports.
Historical and Cultural Significance
Hunza is an ancient historical valley and was an independence kingdom itself till permanent annexation to Pakistan in 1974. Hunzakuts: The people of Hunza are known as Hunzakuts, an ethnic group in the north of Pakistan with a wonderful culture and sagehistory. Known for their warmth and hospitality, this trait became one of the emblematic elements of the region.
Hunzakuts are Ismailis, a sect of Shia Islam, and adhere to the principles of Aga Khan— their spiritual leader. Their society has been deeply influenced by this fact, driving them toward an emphasis on education and community as well as unity.
